OLD PEOPLE PEEVE ME OFF!

OLD PEOPLE ARE CHILDISH AND NUISANCES TO SOCIETY.

Alright you can calm down and listen me out.
I have so much to cover today so lets start one Numero Uno.

I, like mostly every youth in the world and especially in asian culture, was brought up to respect those human prunes (: , being told that they are old and weaker and wiser and have more life experience and thus are supposed to be held in high respect/placed upon a pedestal.

Fair enough.

However, I beg to differ. I believe that the elderly should be treated equally as anyone can be, be it towards a 1 month old or Centenerian ah pek who sits at the local coffee shop and picks his nose day in day out. Respect that should be earned and not given like its a grow-old-get-respected-free Macdonald value deal.

Why my sudden little outburst at elderly people?

Let me share my little 2 cents.

Last Friday I was at work, being the ever polite and enthusiastic waitress that I try to be. Around 6:50pm in trooped an elderly couple looking for a table, without a reservation. Although the restaurant looked pretty empty, all our tables were fully booked and they were all arriving around 7pm-7:30pm. Clearly 10-40mins is not enough time to seat someone down. What more, we are advised at least 1hour+ especially dinner times on Fridays.

Moving on, I proceeded to inform this couple that we only had one spare table outside and that was our only option and I could attempt to move the heater nearer to them.

Old lady : *mumbles* We can't sit outside, we are weak creatures.
Old man : Dont worry bout it then, we'll go somewhere else. Thanks dear.

and so the couple walk off.

3 seconds later I am asked by my co workers if I just served that old couple.

Yes I did. Why?

and the reply?

THEY ARE STANDING OUTSIDE THE RESTAURANT TELLING PEOPLE NOT TO COME IN COS WE ARE CRAP! &^$+*#@!!!!

and I get a nice little telling off =.=

Dearest Mr and Mrs Old Couple, thank you very much for spoiling my day.

Reena *thinking* : WTF them doing that is not my fault! I cannot control their behaviour! You think what?! I can just whip out a remote and press the mute button? 0_o

That isnt the first time Ive seen old people grumble over small things. Sure I would love to care for your welfare but pfft if that old couple came back this time I woldnt hesitate to pop them in a freezer room.

Now whos childish?

I know not all old people are like this, and I just happened to get a taste of the sour side of things. But this leads on to the whole idea Im trying to put across, so just keep that in mind for now as you continue reading.

Young people these days are always branded as being inmature, rude, lazy (yadda yadda yadda) rebels of society. Im not too sure about Singapore but in Perth we are constantly labeled as reckless P-plate drivers by the money-hungry media, ever ready to catch the next P-plate hoo haa and inflating it to colossal proportions. Even my parents critisize every single P plater they see out on the streets that doesnt LOOK (emphasize - LOOK) decent. Ok, next time when I go out and have to drive, I shall wear my ugliest tracky dacks in the car and upon arrival at my destination, change into my party gear. YUP. xD

Now what does the Goverment do about us young drivers?
They impose all kinds of outrageous and unreasonable rules on us.
Like accumalating at least 120 hours of supervised driving (up from 25) before being allowed your P plates, no driving between the hours of 12am-5am and not being allowed to drive with someone of the same/similar age in the car for the first 6 months of your Probationary period.

120 HOURS! Look, 25 hours is already challenging enough to get through with a parental beside you, let alone 120 hours! What do the law makers think? that petrol is free? That people don't have any life besides trying to synchronise daily activities around attempting to clock up an extra 95 useless hours of aimless UNECESSARY driving? Mayve if it was proposed to increase it to 50 hours that would still be manaegeble, though ofc more challenging to get done, 120 hours is really beyond reason.

Have politicians watched An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore? (and Ive YET to see the movie =.=) Excess emmisions of Carbon monoxide are not neccesary.

Picture this. If you had to say, work late at night (ok maybe not a teen driver but say an mid 20's kinda person who just wanted to start learning driving later) or stay back in Uni till really late for some reason or other and you werent allowed to drive home, but instead ring up a parent to come pick you up?

Answer me this, who in their right sane mind would stay up to wait for your call to drive you home at 2am when you are perfectly competent driver yourself with a perfectly capable and functioning car uselessly sitting at home in your garage collecting dust, and it all boils down to the Government thinking you're going to burn rubber day in day out when the majority of young adults are, in reality, good law-abiding citizens who have been stereotyped as hoons just because of the few irresponsible ones.

Just like I labeled old people as childish nuisances in this entry even though I based my attitude on one personal experience, one should not conjure up wild assumptions about young adults and teens just because the media likes to hype everything up about us.

The media is a biased form of communication. Every story, every report and every scene out there is a reconstruction so that it appeals to the audience and arouses us to listen and engage with the topic. Parts/information which could influence you otherwise is of course, left out in order to construct a more effective story.

Like this blog entry for example, I have deliberately left out details which could deter you away from accepting my idea that I intended to present. Why would I mention that I actually forgot we had one last minute empty table in the restaurant so I turned away the couple? Of course that turns this story 180 degrees and back in my face. Obviously I got told off because I turned away a potential customer by mistake. (although their actions was definitely not my fault)

See.
